Errors in the use of Conjunctions

Errors in the use of Conjunctions:  A conjunction is a word used to join or connect words, groups of words, phrases, clauses or sentences.

A) When a negative expression comes at the beginning of a sentence, we use an inverted word order. That means the auxiliary verb comes before the subject. Note that only the auxiliary verb is inverted. The rest of the verb goes after the subject.

  • Incorrect: No sooner we reached the station, the train left.
  • Correct: No sooner did we reach the station, than the train left.
  • B)  There must not a repetition of Conjunction for the same function:                            

  • As I rung the bell, at that time he opened the door. (Incorrect)
  • As I rung the bell, he opened the door. (Correct)
  • C)  In case of ‘No sooner’ an inverted word order is used which means that the auxiliary verb precedes the subject .

  • No sooner I had reached the office than the boss left.  (Incorrect)
  • No sooner had I reached the office than the boss left. (Correct)
  • D)  When the second clause gives an information which is sudden or unexpected “but” must be used instead of “and”.

  • Their front door was opened and there seemed to be nobody at home. (Incorrect)
  • Their front door was opened but there seemed to be nobody at home.  (Correct)
  • E)  When conjunctions are used as correlatives, each of the correlated words  should be placed immediately before the words ti be connected.

  • Rohan not only visited Delhi but also Jaipur.  (Incorrect)
  • Rohan visited not only Delhi but also Jaipur.  (Correct)
